Elam is from Utare on Aranda.  Growing up near the Leadership School, Tannis ran afoul of several imperial students coming out of the school.  He defended himself and put one in the hospital.  Running before the stormtroopers came gunning for him, Elam ran into a rebel intelligence operative keeping an eye on the school.  The operative had seen what Elam had done and eventually made contact.  He was recruited and off to basic training.
