The King Stag is the eldest and most highly revered of Avalon's ruling Council of Mages.  He was brought to the island as a young man, and has served devoutly ever since.  As skilled and powerful as he is, time has taken its toll on Cynric, who may have to choose his replacement sooner than he may like.
