Steph mostly works the night shift at a popular coffee bar. She was born and raised in a doomsday cult that kept itself apart from most of humanity. They trained day and night to fight. Learning to use swords and other melee weapons as opposed to guns due to the Leader's belief that when the End Time came guns would not work.
At the age of 18 she was imitated into the cult's upper echelon. This initiation involved drinking the blood of the Leader. It turned out he was an ancient Assamite and the cult was real, but also to build his number of assassins.
The cult was eventually attacked and destroyed by the Technocrats. Steph escaped and survived. Mostly due to the fact that she'd long ago stopped believing in the Leader as a spiritual guide and that she was willing to work with the Technocracy.
