Ceryni

Hi this sounds like a lot of fun. I've been hoping to find a Risus game because it's just such a simple system but still has some uncertainty unlike freeform games.

So I'd like to play an underworld, thiefy type. Someone who deals in blackmarket deals, trading information, etc.

Name: Ceryni (Cery to friends)

Description: Short and mousy looking, almost boyish in appearances if the eyes didn't give away years of experience. Unkempt, short, black hair and worn and dirty clothes usually looking bland and good for hiding in a crowd or in the shadows.

Short life-story: Cery had grown up on the streets, his father (Harnun) had taught him everything he knew about fighting, sneaking, picking locks. How to deal with thugs and how to make people like you. How to keep a neutral face and how to make people believe what he wanted them to believe. But his father had been stupid, crossed the wrong underworlder and ended up dead for it. His mother (Tania) was still out there but Cery did his best not to draw attention to her for fear that people would use her for blackmail. He'd drop her a letter and some coin when he can but otherwise tried to let her live her life.

He'd taken to life as a thief quite handily with his father's training, making a name for himself working for the right people, earning favours from them and one day he hoped he would have his own territory, his own businesses, his own people under him. He had learned to twist the shadows around him, draw power from them. At first it started as desperation, drawing on something within himself he hadn't known was there to blend into the shadows and evaade pursuer. So he began to train, practice. He slowly learned to form the shadows to his will, creating images, stepping through them as if each shadow were a gateway to the next. Each step he took, each time he stretched himself he found more untapped potential but without formal training he'd never find out what this power was or what he could really do with it.

His combination of wits, fast hands and shadow magic were what sustained this life for him and while he was no lord living in the lap of luxury, at least he wouldn't starve and there was always that hope that one day he could have what he wanted, not just what he needed.

Flaws: Lonely - A lot of Ceryni's work has been alone, it's tough to trust in the underworld. Therefore he sometimes finds himself reaching out to people, hoping to find someone he can trust and more often than not he is cut, sometimes harshly, sometimes dangerously when he discovers betrayal or that he has made a fool of himself.
Unclean Conscience - Ceryni has had to do a lot in his life as an underworlder that he's not proud of. Stealing, blackmailing, even murder on rare occasion. He tells himself he has to do those things to survive but that doesn't help him feel better. He sometimes sees the face of a victim in the crowd before blinking it away. He wakes up in a cold sweat after seeing the look of disappointment in his mother's face. He hopes beyond hope that it'll all be worth it and once he's got status he can start to do something to undo the wrongs he's done, even if it might be a false hope.
Has difficulty saying no to vices - While Ceryni is smart enough to usually not get involved with the various vices that people enjoy, it's a different matter once he gets caught up in them. He might take a lot of convincing to have a drink, but once he's had that first one he'll probably wake up in a compromising position with the night before a blur. Or he might be convinced to just sit in one game of cards and before he knows it it's closing time and he's lost all the money he was carrying.

3 things: Mother, the only person left he has an attachment to. He almost never sees her and that's the best way to keep her safe. Neither of them like it but it's the only way. If something happened to her he'd truly be alone and that thought is terrifying.
Father's daggers, the only thing he has left to remember him by. Without them his connection to his father would be gone. They've kept him safe through many fights.
Hope that he can make things right, every year that hope gets a little dimmer, he contributes to the darkness that's crushing the hope inside him. He clings to it like a life line, hoping that one day you can do something to make things right, to help people, to save people, to do something other than what he has to do to survive.
