M'kRzuRh was born and raised the a'Ndrlee of the a'Ndruhsgns, technically a child stolen from another clan raised to be your clan heir as a means of giving a giant bugger to the clan you were stolen from. In Mac's case the aforementioned clan was a little bit more than peeved and decided to step outside the bounds of honor to do a little weapons trading and conspiring with the Danteri to get their own back. The resulting coalition of clans offended over the treason means there's no negotiating for Mac back, even if he particularly wanted to go back. He only barely remembers his birth parents and not fondly, as they were traitors and fools.

By the time Mac was old enough to fight the Danteri though, Xenex had already been freed and Starfleet personnel were struggling planetside to make sense of the massive mess the Danteri occupation had wrought on a massive scale through interactions with the Xenexians lifting them up from their former pre-industrialized roots until they transformed into a planet of technologically savvy, culturally backwards guerilla fighters. Just some years previous Captain Jean Luc Picard had been on the other side of the world, talking Mackenzie Calhoun into becoming the first Xenexian to join Starfleet - damn the man. Clan a'Ndruhsgn's honor demanded a representative to reclaim their status, and also to promote their mining interests. It was declared that M'kRzuRh would also join Starfleet, by any means necessary.

The Starfleet sociologists were sceptical. Despite provisional allowances, M'k'n'zy was an exceptional representative of the Xenexians who were regarded more as technological barbarians than possible candidates for Starfleet Academy. Much back and forth diplomacy went on, until finally M'kRzuRh's father threatened to withhold a'Ndruhsgn mining rights from Starfleet unless his son was allowed to take the exam. Thinking that the boy couldn't possibly pass the educational requirements, much less the behavioral ones, it was agreed.

Unfortunately for them, Mac tested surprisingly well. In the first place this was because he was a very promising candidate, possessing a keen mind and a surprising interest in the sciences. For seconds, he'd been wooing a young Starfleet Ensign and coaxed her into coaching him in return for access to his charms. Caught between Picard's precedent and their own promises, it was agreed that Mac would enter Starfleet Academy as the second Xenexian to win the honor.
