Ephah

Ephah - Anglicized form of Hebrew unisex Eyphah, meaning "darkness" or "gloomy."

At the dawn of the 23rd century, mankind had finally obtained the much sought-after means of exploring the universe without the need for generational ships. Using a much more advanced and efficient version of the Alcubierre Drive, space vessels could now bend the fabric of space-time itself, allowing humans to visit distant stars and planets well within the limits of their lifetimes.

Though still fragmented and torn by the ever-present conflicts of desires, humanity overcame enough of their nature to establish a committee of explorers and scientists, unaffiliated with Earth or any of its Solar Colonies, one that would offer insight of the Sun's neighboring systems. The idea was to grant humanity enough choice of expansion into the galaxy that they would not end up waging wars over distant resources, as was often the case in the past.

Fast-forward to 2253, and the plan seemed to work rather well. The League of Cartographers established itself as a group of explorers, peace mediators and system brokers for the various human factions, and many enlisted to fulfill either of these three roles. One such ensign was tasked with the exploration of a far-off, white-dwarf system, as was often the case with yet to be trusted League members. Unfortunately, on their arrival within the unknown star system, the ship's Alcubierre Drive malfunctioned, causing it to arrive too deep within a planet's gravity well. Unable to escape its pull, the ship crashed, leaving the lone human stranded and alone, with only an AI and some basic survival tools at their disposal. However, as the ensign journeys further into this unusually dark land, with only the far-off, dim light of a white dwarf as guidance, they may yet find that they are not as alone as they previously thought.
