Background
A native of Argentina, Micaela took advantage of that country's rapidly growing industrial sector and found career success as a remote operator. The rise of the "drone" was more than just a hobbyist movement. The ability to perform delicate or difficult operations while the operator was safely tucked away was valuable for countless employers. And Micaela was not only a skilled operator, she also had a head for the mechanics and programming of the devices she controlled.

The revelation that the world was going to end pushed her, and countless others, out of traditional private sector work. No one knew what the colony ships would find out there, so directed and autonomous robot support would be crucial. That, in turn, meant that those machines had to operate effectively in the most hostile conditions humanity could test them in. Antarctica was one of those places, and Argentina had the largest and most active research facilities on the continent. And Micaela was one of the best operators the country had available.

Despite how critical her work at the south pole was becoming, developing processes and technologies, Micaela was never really a candidate for the first wave of colony ships. She wasn't a traditional academic. She didn't have a lot of formal training, or a network of scholarly friends. She learned and worked in the trenches, and that wasn't sexy enough for the first gen ships.

Which made it all the more a surprise when she was assigned to the Marco Polo. But whether the GNA decided it might be better to focus on practical application than theory or if they had just run out of traditional academics to shoot into space she never found out. The answer didn't matter anyway.

Primary Skills
The bulk of Micaela's professional skills are related to robotics. She initially entered the field as a remote operator for UAVs, but that quickly expanded to include crawlers and swimmers as well. But direct control over a robot is only half of the job. The most efficient and productive drones have also been programmed to perform tasks without operator input, making the operator more shepherd than driver. And since an operator is a better pilot if they understand that programming, Micaela taught herself the machine code commonly used in robotics. A basic understanding of the mechanical and electrical workings of a robot fill out the triumvirate of skills that have driven most of Micaela's career.

Recent events have expanded Micaela's skills in ways she had not anticipated before the day it was announced that the world would end. Since then the young woman has spent much of her time living out of research stations in Antarctica. This has taught her how to survive in hostile environments, how to improvise, and, surprising, how to cook. Out on the South Pole you only have what you brought with you, regardless of what just went wrong.
