Power: Projective Psychic Null

Level: N/A

Abilities: As a Psychic Null, Esme is able to negate the psychic ability of others within a 10 yard radius of herself. Her ability is passive with no awareness to it's application. Due to it's nature she is unable to detect if another is in possession of a psychic ability unless she is out of range and is able to visibly see the effects of such. Likewise this can also apply to some Vampires abilities when it comes to the human psyche such as mind rolling and glamouring. She wouldn't know an attempt has been made, it simply wouldn't work on her.

Weaknesses: All human weaknesses.

Personality in Brief: Esme can adopt a stern position when necessary, equally the same applies to empathy, such is the nature of her line of work, she can't afford to be a push over.  She is otherwise warm, caring and at times, openly friendly. She takes her Job seriously yet at the same time knows when to let loose and have fun with an outgoing edge to her which would surprise some. She has a rather casual approach to relationships seeing sex as a pleasurable no-strings-attached activity she can partake in when it suits her. She doesn't identify with gender specifics when it comes to attraction or shy away from casual and brief encounters. That's not to say she's outwardly promiscuous for promiscuity sake, she is aware that her open mindedness could be considered the result of her rebelling against her childhood influences, though she doesn't categorize or consider herself belonging to any one box, believing individual situations differ. After years of having it drummed in to her (often harshly and physically) that same sex and sex outside of marriage is an abomination, she believes everyone has the right to exercise their own choices without the shame and guilt which society and the opinions of others force upon individuals who do not conform to the status quo.

History

The antique grandfather clock in the drawing room approached midnight as Esme Chesters quietly picked her way through the large house where her siblings and Parents slept. At the end of the corridor there was the dining room. To the right, a locked door to the church which adjoined the house. There was no sound from the top of the staircase that led to her father’s room. Esme stood there in the darkness, staring at the old clock in front of her and watched as the minute hand approached twelve and the moment she would turn eighteen. As the chimes sounded, she ran as fast as she could out of the door into the night. Esme had no idea who had heard her or who, if anyone, was coming after her. She navigated the dark country lane on foot, her lungs gasping for air, fearing the sickening brightness of illuminating headlights in the darkness that surrounded her. She had practiced the route, planned it meticulously, making sure she got everything right, unlike the last two failed attempts which had resulted in imprisonment within the basement of the old house. But this time it was different, she was at an age where her parents no longer had the power over her they had once had. For the past year she had squirreled away money, untraceable, taken from church donations before her Father was able to count it. She skipped school the previous week, took the bus two towns over and purchased an old car she’d bought from Craigslist for $250 and prayed it was still where she left it. Then she disappeared, away from the church, from her Father’s abuse and from the only life she’d ever known. Driving aimlessly in the opposite direction until the old car ran out of gas.

Esme was the forth of eight children of Edward Chesters, a pastor of Moss Creek Baptist Church within a small town in rural Alabama.  Esme's older brother Elijah committed suicide one year prior due to their Father's staunch beliefs and strict abusive upbringing. Elijah's secret been discovered and believing he could be cured of his sins in homosexuality, on the instruction of their Father he underwent brutal beatings and 'Straight' Counselling. Edward Chesters refused to give a proper church service for his Son, committing him to the care of the Coroners office with the stipulation he was buried in an unmarked grave within a communal cemetery. That was when Esme truly knew she hated him with a passion, she would celebrate the day he was struck down dead. And if her Father spoke the true words of God, then she hated him too.

Things got rough for Esme when she ran away from home with a small spell of living out of her car. There was a time in her life when she had zero self-worth and struggled to get by but nothing would make her go back to the brutal hand of her Father. She learned a lot within the next year, by the time she turned nineteen she was working three minimum paid jobs and had secured herself a rented room in a shared house.  Her progression into Social care was purely coincidental though Esme always knew that she wanted to make a difference in the way she wished she could have made a difference to Elijah. She took part time classes at a local community College and managed to get a new Administrative job with more pay at a local Psychiatric Hospital specializing in young adults with Psychic abilities.  It was there where Esme's own unique ability was discovered. Some of the Patients became a lot calmer around her, more responsive and tended to like being around her. It was duly noted by the Staff and Head Doctor, Gerald Matthias took a particular interest. After carrying out trials with various Patients he confirmed that Esme was considered a rare breed, she was a Projective Psychic Null. A passive ability which enabled her to cancel out the psychic ability of another. Her presence gave respite to those tormented by their uncontrolled abilities and although he had read studies of their existence, he was yet to actually meet one. Esme became a precious commodity to the Hospital and soon she was sitting in on groups sessions and one to ones with those considered a high security risk.

It wasn't enough, she wanted more. Once released from the Hospital most patients had trouble integrating themselves back into society without Familial support and from Esme's own experience, she was aware of the struggles of being penniless and having nowhere to live. Paired with mental instability they stood no chance. They needed ongoing care and rehabilitation. To wash their hands of these people once they were out of the system was cruel and they more often than not fell back into the system elsewhere where their needs and care was not met. Many had developed Mental illness through years of trauma and the Government offered too little support. Execution sadly was not the rarity it should have been when been when it came to those considered most unhinged.  She took a brave risk, on the condition she remained at the Hospital she struck a deal with Dr. Matthias to facilitate an after-care program and with his financial help she would be trained, acquiring the qualifications to fulfill the role needed.  He agreed and Riverview became the pioneering institute with a specialized department for after-care which many facilities would hopefully follow, engaging with various Charity organisations to assist in the financial support needed.
