Jezzara Marak

Young, alone in the world, and cursed to live without the gift of sight. Jezzara Marak might sound like the lead figure in some terrible tragedy, but the young woman has spent her whole life to make sure that she isn't a victim. She has succeeded in that endeavor.

Born in the sprawling Ceron city of Cresciasca, Jezzara was but one of the teeming thousands of slum-born peasants. Orphaned at a young age, raised by the streets, she was saved from that sad and dreary life by a mysterious man who simply called himself Whisper. At first, the cynical street urchin assumed the man wanted a servant that he could easily control due to her handicap. Or, perhaps the man had unsightly desires, and he wanted someone who could not identify him. But that was not to be the case.

Yes, Jezzara was expected to perform some servant like duties for Whisper, such as being his cup-bearer, but her days were filled with more unusual activities. Whisper claimed that her lack of sight was not a weakness, and that she should never let the world try to take advantage of her because of it. He told her that in fact, it could be a gift, if she trained her body and mind correctly. At first, he simply taught her to feel her environment. Then how to move through it. Before she knew it, he was teaching her how to defend herself from attackers, both singular and multiple, using only her hands and feet. Then they moved onto the blade. Dagger, sword, and all their variants were made known to her. Whisper even insisted on teaching her to used ranged weapons, though even with her other senses, Jezzara always found that difficult.

For a long time, Jezzara felt like she was living in some sort of fairy tale. From poverty, to the mansion of some clearly wealthy mentor, and learning the ways of battle. Jezzara thought Whisper was training her to be able to defend herself and be self-reliant after his death. She even assumed he might leave her his wealth as his ward. But the truth of the matter became apparent when Whisper began teaching her some deadlier arts. Poisoning, strangulation, espionage, assassination...why would a kindly old man teach her these things? It didn't take long for Jezzara to figure out the truth. Whisper was training her to be an assassin. And in Ceron, that could only mean freelance assassins, who were loyal only to coin, but no flag or king.

Jezzara was many things, but cold blooded murderer wasn't one of them. And so, despite her loyalty and gratitude to the man who had trained and raised her, she left Whisper, and ran far from Cresciasca. She doesn't know where her life will take her, or how she will make a life for herself. But she can protect herself, and has the skills to make her dreams a reality. Now she wanders, always "watching" her back, in case her old mentor should appear to claim her.
