***Background***
As the Roman legions left Britain behind Gracian's great-great-grandfather the equestrian Marcus Laelius Varus decided to remain on his lands. After the family had spend centuries in Britain it felt more like home than distant Rome and Varus had lost fate in Rome and the increasingly distant Emprerors. So he staid behind and his family continued to control the land and survive through the dark years of raids, famine, unrest, rebellions and wars.

Gracian's father, Decius, strongly supported Uther Pendragon as he saw Uther as a source of stability to the island. As such he managed to strengthen his claim on his land but as he seem unable to father a child. Yet for some mysterious reason a brief affair with the servant girl Adi produced a son. Adi died during childbirth and Decius adopted the boy as his own and named him Gracian. There are rumours that the old Decius had had feelings for the servant girl but he never told anyone about it and Adi was never mentioned again.

And now Sir Gracian - or Gracian the Barstard as he is better known - is the 24 year old master of Dinton Manor. It was once a Roman villa but centuries of neglect, poverty and unrest has reduced Dinton Manor to a shadow of what it once was. Only old mosaics, the odd pillar and empty pools shows that it was once Roman.

Gracian is a man torn between two worlds. His father always told him stories about the former glories of Rome while living in little more than a ruin. As a Roman Gracian has always been seen as "different" and a remnant of the past without a place in Britain. As a barstard he is seen as an accident and embarrassement. Yet all the opposition he faces has just made him more determined to succeed. He is determined to rebuild his lands and bring back some of it's glorious parts and is known not just for his energetic ways but also his just decisions. Perhaps he wants to prove that he too has his place in Britain.

Gracian is a rather ruggedly handsome man with an impressive physique, surprisingly straight teeth, a surprising touch for political survival and the posture of a warrior.

In 515 AD he marries Lady Ariette and receive the Banneretcy of Stonewall.

In 516 AD he fightsagainst the Irish during their invasion of Salisbury and during Winter his wife dies giving birth to their daughter.
