Silvia grew up in Sagonquit with her parents as an only child.  She initially went to college for two years, undecided in her future.  She had a difficult time acclimating to college with their schedules since time was not strictly adhered to in her hometown.  It was a culture shock for her.  Eventually, she joined the academy since her hometown would pay for it.  Sagonquit funded her training at the academy under the stipulation that she would under law enforcement on the reservation.  Years later, she was still there.  For the most part, it was an easy job and less stressful than working off the reservation.
