The youngest of eleven brothers and sisters, Dar is of low caste and high aspiration. His family is a sea folk, and from infancy Dar has learned to harvest the sea for survival—often at great personal cost. The sea life is a hard one, and his demeanor is far from buoyant.

Dar is an awkward collection of sinew and bone, and he has but one eye. In place of that missing eye is the largest pearl his father ever did find.
