You will never hear Caliban "the Mooncalf" in the water. If you're lucky, you might spot the barest ripple as he breaks surface, or reach somewhere where he has to haul out and chase you with lurching steps, still hobbled by the remains of chains grown into his white flesh. They say Caliban survived too much to remember how to die. They say he hears everything, down there in the dark, but understands nothing but endless rage and hatred, trapped in the sewers of the people who enslaved him and hauled him across a desert he cannot cross alone. Almost blind, they say Old Caliban can nonetheless smell an intruder as soon as they touch the water.
