Vrykolas are corpses which have been possessed by nasty spirits, either because they were buried in unhallowed ground or raised by black magic. These corpses can be fresh or long dead -- it doesn't matter to the spirit. But the head must be intact, and only wounds to the head will injure a Vrykola as it shambles through the streets looking for blood to drink to sustain itself.
