Background: Amelie Reid is a former U.S. Army communications specialist who served from when she was eighteen until she turned 32. A communications specialist, she spent her mid-career stationed at the Torii Communications Station in Okinawa, Japan. It was during that period that she met the Japanese electrician Asahi Hata (or Hata Asahi in the Japanese tradition) and became pregnant with Akari Reid-Hata. She never married or became seriously involved with Asahi, and Amelie and Akari spent the next five years in Japan before Amelie returned to the United States, where she was stationed at various bases in California.

After her military career was over Amelie stayed in San Francisco to raise her half-Japanese daughter near a large Asian population. She took a job in a call center with the communications company AT&T, working her way up from phone rep to call center manager.

Amelie grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of a working class family.
