Celene Johnson

THE BASICS
Name: Celene Johnson
Nickname: Cici (though call her that at your own peril)
Age: 32
Weight: 160
Height: 5'11
Hair Color: Dark brown
Eye Color: Brown
Distinguishing Marks: A tattoo of a bow and arrow superimposed over a full moon on her left calf.

Physical Description: Celene has a tall, lithe figure that speaks of a lifetime of athletics. She favors earth tones and loose, cotton clothing. She's aware of her stunning beauty, but rarely dresses evocatively; you'd be hard pressed to get her into anything frilly or overly feminine. She hates the color pink. When dressed for battle, she wears hardened leather armor over a short tunic, not dissimilar to what her mother wore in the legends.

Lineage: Artemis

INTROSPECTION
Personality: Celene is plain-spoken and often uncompromising. She's the prickly sort, but underneath all that is a deep level of compassion for the hurt, the helpless, and the downtrodden. Born of no man, she takes a dim view of them; it's not impossible for a man to earn her respect, but they certainly don't start with it. She's not quick to anger, but those who earn her ire are dealt with swiftly. Ever a child of the forest, she relates better to animals than she does to people.

She is not a vegetarian par se, and takes no issue with hunting if it is done with the proper respect for nature (she rather enjoys it herself, obviously), but she finds the prospect of food farms to be downright revolting. Given the choice, she will avoid animal products that have not been gathered in a manner that shows nature due consideration.

Strengths: Celene's stony exterior is supported by a core of iron determination. She'll not give up easily, no matter the difficulty presented to her. She's a survivor, and she'll do what it takes to stay alive.

Weaknesses: Celene's implacable nature has one flaw--one must adapt to survive. The bendable sapling weathers the storm better than the rigid oak. She hasn't quite grasped that concept yet.

Fears: She'll tell you that her greatest fear is the end of all things, that she does not wish to see the total end of existence for either mortal or divine, that she fears a failure to survive. But it goes deeper than that. She fears losing herself. She is afraid that her sense of identity will be drowned out by others imposing their will upon her.

Hopes: With the death of Artemis, Celene hopes that some day she might ascend to fill the void left by her mother.

TALENTS AND ABILITIES
Inherited Godly Powers:

Environmental Adaption: Celene is immune to the effects of exposure, whether it be extreme heat or cold. She can go days without food or water.

Animal Instinct: Celene can communicate with and understand nature's creatures, from the beetle to the mountain lion. They serve at her command. She also thinks like a creature perfectly tuned to nature, often detecting storms long before anyone else. Among the forests, she is never lost (though she is hopeless at navigating in a city).

Hunter's Inheritance: Because of her divine heritage, Celene is stronger, faster, and far more agile than any mortal. She's not much more difficult than any mortal to wound, but her godly instinct to survive makes her nearly impossible to kill. These traits increase exponentially depending on the phase of the moon. When it is full, she's almost unstoppable--though the flip side of that is that she's only a little above mortal capabilities during the New Moon phase. This ability seems unaffected by things like cloud or forest cover.

Nature's Vengeance: When man, in his ignorance or maliciousness, is on a path to bring great harm on her or someone she cares about, an overwhelming power bursts forth from her and transforms the perpetrator. What results is no longer human, but a beast of nature. She can't control this, but the beast the man becomes is often indicative of the crime she feels they have committed: if their lies have brought them ruin, they'll turn into a snake, etc. This either doesn't work at all on women, or she's never felt so threatened by one. This also drains Celene, leaving her as weak as any mortal, and often unconscious. It's only ever happened to mortals, but instinct leads Celene to believe it would not be impossible with a demigod, though it would undoubtedly leave her powerless for a long time, if not outright kill her.

Basic Skills:

Combat Proficiency: Celene has trained with a number of weapons, including the spear and short sword. Her most proficient weapon, however, is the bow. She shoots unerringly, even at a great distance nigh unheard of, even among gods. She's also a fair hand at tactics.

Survivalist: There is little of flora and fauna that she doesn't know. She's been trained in plants' medicinal uses, and knows which ones are safe to eat. Her tracking skills border on uncanny. She's also sure of foot, allowing her to move almost soundlessly.

Animal Affinity: Even without the benefit of her godly abilities, Celene has a deep appreciation for animals. She's a dog person over a cat person, but has a great deal of affection for both. She particularly likes horses too, and is an exceptional rider. This feeling among all animals appears to be mutual.

THE JUICY BITS
Backstory: Thirty-some odd years ago, a woman named Sophia Johnson greatly desired a child. Sadly, the efforts of her and her husband, Grant, were for naught. Sophia came from a long line of Greeks that still held quiet worship in the ancient gods, and so in her devotion, she pleaded that they might grant a miracle. One night, the woman was compelled to take a walk around their Montana ranch under the light of the full moon.

It was in that light, when the moon was at its zenith, that the woman was visited by the virgin goddess of the hunt. Artemis told Sophia that she had heard her request. She would put a part of herself in the woman's womb, and the child would grow to be the daughter of both the mortal woman and the goddess.

Celene was born, to the woman's delight, hale and healthy, and for eleven years Sophia enjoyed the company of her beautiful, brown-haired daughter. Then the woman died, leaving Celene to be raised alone by the man steeped in the moral tradition of the midwest. Grant was unaware of the role the goddess had played in Celene's immaculate conception, and was determined that his daughter would grow up to be a proper young lady. Celene was not interested.

Grant objected to the strong will of his daughter. He believed a woman's place was at home. Celene had no use for such archaic ideals, and spent her time in the nearby forests or caring for the animals on the ranch. The rift between the two of them grew further when Grant caught Celene in the stables kissing a girl.

Her rebellious independence not withstanding, Celene did care for her father. He encouraged her to accept the high school quarterback's invitation to their prom. In an attempt to appease Grant, Celene agreed to go with the young Tom Williams.

The whole affair was painfully dull and awkward. Celene's date finally consented to bring her home, but he stopped the car halfway there. Tom expressed his dissatisfaction in her as a companion and outright told her that she owed him something more for his efforts. The conflict grew heated. Then physical.

But before Tom could do anything, something happened that Celene could never quite explain. Her would-be attacker vanished, and in his place was a pig, the most grotesque that Celene had ever seen.

It charged off down the deserted road, but before it got far, the shaft of an arrow pierced the beast clean through. The last thing Celene saw before she lost consciousness was the form of a statuesque woman bathed in the light of the full moon.

When she woke, Celene lay in the forest in the company of the largest stag she had ever seen. She barely had time to register that before the moonlit woman made another appearance. To Celene's surprise, she knew who she was. She was in the presence of her divine mother.

Artemis took Celene from that world to be trained. Leaving the world of man behind for a time, Celene joined the group of Artemis' maidens where they were all taught the art of combat and the hunt. Celene found acceptance among them. She forged fast friendships. She even fell in love with a girl named Luna.

Sadly, it was a relationship that was not meant to be. Celene never found the courage to tell the young woman she fell in love with how she felt, and as the Titans took their revenge, Artemis and her maidens were swept up in the ensuing war. The war was rife with tragedy. Artemis fell. Luna died in battle without ever knowing of Celene's feelings.

Celene picked up Artemis' bow and attempted to unite the maidens that were left into some sort of cohesion. The results were less than successful.

After a long time trying to find her own way to fight in the arduous war, Celene made her way to Rhodes. Perhaps with her sisters and brothers and cousins she might find a way to end the war and avenge her divine mother.

Celene still possesses the bow. She cannot wield it as efficiently as her mother, of course, and cannot yet unlock all its power. With it, however, she can shoot farther and with more accuracy than even her tremendous skill would allow. The bow also taps into her divine power to do far more damage than any ordinary weapon.
