Gandalf is one of the last of the wizards to appear in Middle-earth. He appears to be the least, less tall than the others, and in looks appears more aged, grey-haired and grey-clad, and leaning on a staff. His bushy brows and long hawk like nose can be seen beneath the shadow of his gray floppy hat. The wizard's face is equally capable of showing mirth or displeasure. His eyes glean with merriment or can become cold and stern. He often partakes of "pipe weed" from the Shire. Old Toby is his favorite. Gandalf has taken an extreme liking to the Shire and its resident Hobbits.

Gandalf, one of the Istari, travels in this guise across Middle Earth, ever vigilant of the growing Shadow. He is an active member of the Council of the Wise and is the most likely member of that group to advocate action over waiting. He has close friends among all the Free People who know him by many names.
