Before coming to Brakebills, Emberly had basic idea of what Magic was and was not. While she wasn't raised by parents that were Magician's, a family friend (who happened to be a Hedge Witch and the leader of the local safe house) saw her potential from the time she was 12. She taught her bits of Magic from all sorts of Disciplines, trying to give her a basic over view of everything there was to know, grooming her in a way so that she would hopefully be accepted into Brakebills when she was old enough, and if not, would have the starts of becoming a great Hedge Witch.
So by the time that Em was accepted into Brakebills, she was skilled at all and a master of none. Because of this it took quite a bit longer than usual for the professors to determine her Discipline. Eventually however it was determined that she should be placed with the Psychic Kids after showing a bit more potential in that field than the others.

The Physical
Physical Description: Emberly is a relatively tall, thin girl standing at approximately 5' 10" (178 cm) and weighing 128 lb (58 kg), however the weight seems to fit her frame well and still allows her a healthy amount of curves. She has long toned legs that are often shown off due to her wearing skirts with tights relatively often. The rest of her body is in just as good of shape as her legs even though she doesn't work out much at all and when she does its usually doing yoga at home.
She has natural wavy red hair that falls past her shoulders, but has worn it quite short in the past and is considering cutting it off again sometime soon. The two most prominent features on her face are her large and expressive eyes (which vary in color from green to brown depending on the weather) and her plump lips that are typically coated in some shade of red lipstick. This bold lipstick however is usually the only stand out item of make up that she does, preferring to keep her eyes more natural with simple eyeliner and mascara. Her skin is pale and smooth with a light spattering of freckles and cheeks that blush very easily when she is feeling shy or awkward, so most of the time really.
The way that she dresses tends to be more on the conservative side, however sometimes when she is feeling particularly brave, she will wear something more fitted and relieving. The style tends to be more feminine with dresses and skirts which make her seems like she is always dressing up a little bit.
Distinguishing Features: One of the first things that people notice about Emberly is her bright red hair and she would consider that to be her most distiguishing feature. On her person she almost always has a small bag that holds her school books and a novel or two for her to read in her spare. She also has a pair of black plastic framed glasses but typically only wears them while studying.
The Personal
Personality Description: At first glance, one would think that Emberly is a shy, introverted girl who is a bit awkward and nervous around people and for the most part, that description is accurate. She quite reserved, quiet, and typically keeps her thoughts and opinions to herself. Although some people assume that because she doesn't say much she is aloof and stuck up, but thats not the case at all, Em is just nervous around new people and is afraid that when she speaks nobody will listen or care what she has to say. Sadly, thats how things seemed to go for her when she was in public schools as a kid before her parents pulled her out and started homeschooling her.
Due to her fear of getting hurt by others again she's not one to have a large group of friends. Those that she allows herself to get close to though are able to see a completely different side of Emberly than the rest of the public does. In her small group of trust friends, she's the one that seems to hold everyone together. Em is extremely loyal and if someone tells her a secret you can guarantee that she won't spread it or gossip about you behind her back. Around her friends she almost always has a smile on her face and will go out of her way to make sure that everyone is happy.
The Biographical
Characters History: Emberly was born as the only child to her non-magical parents and for the majority of her life they lived in a nice upper middle class neighborhood in Manhattan, New York. From a young age however her quite nature made it difficult for her to make friends and in grade school she was more likely to be found reading a book under a tree than running around playing games with the other kids her age. Sadly this along with the fact that she was the only redhead in her class led to her getting teased by her peers more often than not. It got even worse when it started getting to the point where grades really mattered and she always seemed to ace her tests and assignments which put even more distance between them.
Her parents kept her at the public school, but once Emberly was diagnosed with Anxiety and Depression due to the constant bullying by other students, they pulled her out of her class and started homeschooling her hoping that it would help her feel better. It did exactly that and from the age 11 onwards she was homeschooled by her parents and some private tutors.
One of these tutors was a Leslie, a close family friend who was the first to notice that Em had magical tendencies soon after her 12th birthday. Unknown to Emberly's family, Leslie was a quite powerful Hedge-Magician who ran one of the largest Safehouses. Leslie began integrating small bits of magic into Em's lessons and eventually told her about what magic is and she eventually began meeting with her outside of her tutoring at the Safehouse. Emberly never started the tests to become a Hedge-Magician and Leslie actually didn't want her to. She was hoping that once Em was old enough she would be accepted into Brakebills, something that Leslie had only ever dreamed of.
Em learned the basics of all the different Magical Disciplines and quickly worked her way through the books of basic spells that Leslie had been collecting for the Safehouse. She had been starting to work on more complicated Magic when Leslie's hope came true and Em found herself standing on the Brakebills lawn. She had been told about this by Leslie and some of the others at the Safehouse so Em wasn't at all worried or confused about what was happening. Instead, she walked confidently up to the building to sit through the exam, passing it with flying colors and being accepted into the most prestigious of schools for Magicians.
