History

Opie was paroled from a two-year stay in prison at Elf town. He had been convicted for a botched arson with his best friend Half-Sack. After he returned, bandits attempted to kill Opie, but instead killed his wife, Donna.

Opie was still very depressed over the death of Donna. He had become distant from his 4-year-old son, and had started crashing at Half-Sack’s house. Opie also began taking more risks for the Village. Half-Sack has had concerns that Opie had some sort of death wish and confronted Opie about this.

During this time, Opie discovered that a group of bandits had killed his father, Piney. These were the same bandits responsible for the death of his wife. He decided that he had to stop the bandits before they could hurt anyone else he loved. He tracked down the bandits and shot the Bandit Leader twice. Half-Sack followed Opie, and in an attempt to stop him, shot him in the arm to prevent him from using his gun-hand. Half-Sack took Opie to Piney’s cabin, then went to talk to the bandits and clear everything up.

When Half-Sack returned, he told Opie that the Bandit Leader was not dead. He warned that they would need to wait until the time was right to take out the Bandit Leader, and that he would help Opie do so.

Personality

Opie’s most powerful trait is his unbreakable loyalty towards Slaney and his best friend, Kip ‘Half-Sack’ Epps. Even after spending two years in jail for Slaney, he is willing to do anything to help the Village. After his release from prison, Opie has been torn between leaving Half-Sack and becoming a family man or staying with Half-Sack and risking his life and freedom once again.

Opie may seem gentle, but has a vicious streak. He savagely beat and shot the Bandit Leader when he confessed to being responsible for Donna’s murder, and went on to threaten the Bandit Leaders men for it. However, even as he threatened to kill the men, he revealed that his gun was empty, telling them to remember that “the outlaw had mercy.”
