Most often, EDI is a disembodied voice speaking for the intelligence construct created and maintained by Ibuki Satou for use by the Order of Sir Klein in Austin. In her pure form, EDI is vastly knowledgeable about a great number of topics in general and about math and science in particular, even without an outside connection to the web. While she has web access, EDI is, for practical purposes, basically omniscient within the scope of human knowledge.
She also has a strange sense of humor.
