Jacob Fleury showed a proficiency for learning languages at an early age. Being raised in a dual language family helped. His father is American and his mother, the daughter of a diplomat working in Washington, D.C., French. His father and mother met at the outset of the war, the Big One, WWII, married and had Jacob. Their relationship lasted longer than the war and most other marriages, especially from a happiness standpoint. They are still married to this day.

By the time Fleury earned his Bachelor's Degree in Linguistics, he had learned to read and write three other languages besides his native English and French. Jacob was contemplating a career in academia a week before his graduation in the spring of 1963 when he was visited by a recruiter for the CIA on the campus of the University of Virginia. The CIA was looking for translators and they paid well. He began working overseas. A natural athlete, a player of baseball and football, he was a perfect fit to step into the role of a special agent. His skill in firearms, boxing, and silent movement were learned at the CIA Training Academy in Langley, Virginia.
