Katya was born in Leningrad at the closing of WW2, daughter of Soviet aviation general Arkady Sokolov and crack aviator Lena Sedova. She trained as a rhythmic gymnast and was part of the Soviet team at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. There she took the most important decision of her life, aged only 15, and managed to give her handlers the slip, defecting to the West. For the next years she drifted through Europe, surviving in less than ethical and legal ways.

She first appeared in the radar of a CIA operative in 1965, as the lover of the KGB rezident in West Berlin. She was receptive when approached, but she wanted more than mere money for her collaboration. The CIA obtained not just the goods but also a new agent, and Katya got a new life as the West German citizen (and CS-14 operative) Ursula Lang, nightclub singer and aspiring actress.

She was deployed mostly in West Germany, honeytrapping Soviet diplomats, until the spring of 1967:

May 31st: first international mission to Copenhagen, with Victoria Fitzwilliams.
June 1st: finds Masha in Tivoli Gardens, rescues her from her Soviet minders and takes her to the West German embassy
June 2nd: they get back to Germany
June 7th: Meets handler Marie Schussel at a swimming pool in Offenbach
