Realms of Adventure: OOC Forum (Forgotten Realms DnD 3.5)

Well met, traveller. Welcome to the Realms Of Adventure.

Realms Of Adventure (or RoA as we like to call it) is a community of play-by-post games all set in and around the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. We use the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition rules, or 3.0 for stuff that hasn't been updated. Our version of the Forgotten Realms is set in the year 1375 DR (mostly in the summer, fall or winter) and lately 1376 DR, in the classic world of adventure and intrigue and heroics. This is long before the Spellplague and other catastrophes strike, and we likely shall not be going along with that event.

RoA is basically a number of play-by-post Forgotten Realms games combined into one. If you have only played D&D on tabletop with friends, imagine playing in a really big room with tables upon tables of other gaming groups. Each table has its own DM, its own set of players and PCs, and each is running through their own region of the Forgotten Realms, playing their own adventures. The advantage is that we can help each other out when times are tough, give advice, and rescue each other's games or players rather than let them die out.

Here, different DMs run their own adventures in their own lands of Faerûn, entirely independently yet part of a larger world. News and rumours and shared events may appear from time to time. PCs may travel from region to region and explore the world and meet other PCs. Think of it as like an MMORPG, only much slower and without the computer graphics. It's a fun and enjoyable community that has lasted for over ten and is still going strong.

If you wish to have your character move on, then you may apply to another DM for a transfer into their region. You may do this if your DM vanishes or retires, or if you just want a change of scenery. If a DM does leave, then we head DMs will endeavour to find a replacement to take-over, preferably continuing the current adventure. Unlike independent games elsewhere on RPoL, your character is not left in the lurch when a GM quits; they may continue their story and have a much longer life-span, with no need to rebuild.

To join as a player, simply request access to this forum, and discuss your character concept with a DM who has advertised an opening in their game. We have a list of open game spots in a thread called "Available Space for Players" in the OOC Forum. Then create your PC using our PC Creation Rules and the PC Sheet found here in the RoA: OOC Forum, and submit the completed PC sheet to the sheet checker DMs in a private message. Once they give it their seal of approval, you are ready to play.

If you would like to DM for us, then simply request access and discuss it with the head DMs. Please indicate your experience as a DM in general and in play-by-post gaming, and your experience with the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, as well as anything else you'd like us to know. Knowledge of FR is nice but not essential; we can share heaps of information on the setting and direct you to small-scale regions to try out. We'll answer any questions you have, and let you look around first to see what you think.

We have many games that need to be taken over as their last DMs have had to retire for various real-life reasons. We are also always interested in DMs coming in and starting their own regions in RoA, though it is preferred that you adopt an orphaned game where possible.

The head DMs are DM BadCatMan and DM Kilric. They are here to help you, so don't be afraid to contact them if you need anything or have any problems.

While we are using the 3.5 rules, you do not need to go out and buy the new books or anything. You can simply use the 3.5 SRDs for the Player's Handbook (and other D&D OGL items) which is found in a link in "Links to 3.5 Information" on this site. We have resources for player use that lay out the basic rules of FR play. DMs and many players will help you with information/questions. A list of rules, PrCs, source materials, etc., which we allow for player use in RoA is here too.

So if you have any other questions, ask in the form of a PM or, once you're in as a player, in the "Ask the RoA Sage" thread here in RoA: OOC Forum.

We hope you have a great time!
