Boko was born to parents Oliver and Mimi Owens, founders of a now massive inter-planetary corporate empire.  As the firstborn, she was expected to grow up to take over the business, but even as a baby it soon became clear that the she was far too shy for such a role.  Her parents were determined to do the best they could to 'cure' her of her shyness for her own good, but then her younger brother was born, and he was found to be far more outgoing.  So without the pressure of having to ensure little Boko could survive the corporate world, the parents settled into raising their children to fall into whatever roles they chose naturally.

But over the course of growing up, Boko wound up determined to cure herself of her shyness.  Most everything she tried failed, so in a last-ditch effort to force herself into a position where she'd have to learn to be assertive, Boko decided to sign on with the Federation Military's Officer Candidate's School even as tempting as correspondence college was.  She's regretted the decision ever since.
