Jan (pronounced Yahn) Czerny is a bulky, solid man in his late thirties, standing about 5'10" and weighing a bit over 200lbs. He keeps his dark hair cropped short, partly to hide the gray appearing at the temples and partly to prevent the beginnings of male pattern baldness showing. His face is broad with high cheekbones and is weathered as if he has spent a lot of time outdoors.

He normally wears a nondescript mix of military and civilian clothing, currently a pair of British Army issue thermal combat trousers in a DPM pattern, a dark grey hooded sweatshirt with a fur lined, Red Army winter field jacket in Soviet leaf-pattern camouflage over the top of it and a pair of insulated winter combat boots. When it is particularly cold he adds a black woolen skull cap for warmth and on patrol he wears a Kevlar helmet, a Kevlar vest and a Lifchik chest harness with an attached grenade belt. He normally carries an AK-74 with an underslung BG-15 grenade launcher and has a Sig Sauer P226 in a drop leg holster,

He seems to speak both English and Polish, though it is clear that neither is his native language. He claims to be of Czech ancestry, have grown up in France and have served in the French Foreign Legion, though there is no proof that any of this is true.

When not on active duty he is rarely without a cigarette or a pipe of tobacco and he likes to drink strong black coffee when given the opportunity.
