He is ambitious, determined and competitive; but can also be proud, arrogant and prone to self-doubt.

His rebellious streak is tolerated because of his exceptional aptitude, but it has been suggested that he would be better suited as a civilian researcher than as a Starfleet officer. Nevertheless, he seems to have adapted to his current assignment, largely because of the acceptance he received aboard the USS Delaware.

During his time at the Academy, Soong lost someone who was very close to him, another officer with whom he had become romantically involved. She was killed during the war with the Dominion, and his psychological test at the academy forced him to come to terms with her death. However, he still faces challenges in forming intimate relationships, preferring to keep others at arm’s length.

Background:
Soong was admitted to Starfleet Academy at an age well below the standard admission age for a human male.

He completed a six-year program at the Academy in only four years, despite taking on additional self-study projects in cybernetics and robotics, and tutoring his fellow students in computer science. He was involved in a classified project for Starfleet Intelligence, which involved --CLASSIFIED BY SI--.

Lt. Soong is currently working towards the creation of an android in his off-duty hours. The state of this research is unknown.
