Zoey Granger had a rough childhood, her teenage-addict-mother abandoned her at the hospital after giving birth. Zoey was unfortunately born with the same addiction to Lix, a drug meant to enhance humans in attempts to keep up with the paras. The hospital staff immediately started treating her, but the risk was too much for adoptive parents to take on. By the time Zoey was completely healthy again, she was past the prime adopting age and spent the rest of her youth bouncing around foster homes in Chicago. Her homes were never all that bad and considering her circumstances she actually got lucky to grow up so level-headed. Despite Zoey's efforts, she has never found either of her parents, upon finding hospital records she chose to take the last name of the nurse who watched over her. Afterall, the nurse is the one who actually cared for her and even gave her the name Zoey after the greek origin meaning "Life".

It was hard to make friends when you changed homes every two years, it was even harder to keep friends when you give them new identities and an escape from their life. Which is what Zoey started doing, she quickly realized that if she could use her computer to access all of her records she could also use it to fabricate records. Her skills grew rapidly as she made her friends fake IDs and faked paperwork to give them new lives, out of foster care where they could disappear and never be bothered by the "system" again. It was her way of rebelling, as far as her host families were concerned, she kept to herself and spent all day well-behaved on her own laptop. The more lucrative her hacking became the better equipment she was able to afford until she finally had quite the operation going. She donned the name "The Phoenix" as she gave people "new life" and became well known in certain circles. The authorities are vaguely aware of the hacker creating good fake IDs and altering the occasional records but she has yet to be caught doing anything worth hunting her down.

When Zoey finally turned 18, she was pretty preoccupied with trying to get her life together and find a place to live that she missed all the news about the big Jack Jennings scandal. It wasn't until she was fully settled into her place and started her search again that she came across the news. She recognized the name, having seen her birth certificate she knew her mother's name, Dana Jennings. It was a long shot but Zoey did some digging, and eventually tracked him down as everyone seemed to know his favorite place to go was "The Liar's Club". She surprised him when she was 20, with questions and facts and found out that he is in fact her uncle. Jack never knew she existed, as he explained his sister, Dana, ran away when she was 16 and he never heard from her again. Unfortunately, both his parents were already deceased at this point so asking them was out of the question. Together they searched for either of her parents but still came up short of anything useful. However, for the first time Zoey had a real-life friend and family member, Jack got her a DJ gig at Liar's and Zoey has continued to stick around for the past couple of years.
