Rethel

Rethel is a 6’8 tall human, armored in chainmail with a bow, circular shield and Warhammer. He has a cloak made of a fur pelt. His hair and eyes are wild, but the rest of him remains hygienic. Wears war paint when at war.

GM - Char Info:

Housecarl and cousin of Buliwyf, a King of the Væringi. The Væringi live in the far north and frequently fight and trade with their neighbors of equal frequency. They are as comfortable raiding on the sea as on land but cooperate on occasion when one of the sleeping evils beneath the ice and mountains stirs.

Rethel was one of the group that traveled with King Buliwyf to the aid of the Kingdom of Vaesen in a time of troubles. A nameless evil had stirred deep beneath the mountain fortress and the warriors braved the caverns and catacombs to curb its influence on the kingdom. Many of them were slain, and King Buliwyf succumbed to a wasting sickness shortly after the final battle. The few survivors had their spirits tainted by the presence of the Unnamed Evil. Some have succumbed and had to be slain. As the whispers and malaise set in, Rethel underwent a spirit quest to speak with the Shaman of the Bones who told him to travel south, away from the cold ones whispers. “Seek to wash your soul clean with blood and battle, and the Raven God will welcome you into his hall, if you avoid dying in your bed”. Thus instructed, he cut his braid, returned his rings to Buliwyf’s Brother Hrothgar and left for warmer climates and battles elsewhere.

Rethel travels and looks for battles where heroic deeds may add to his legend and earn his way into Valhalla despite the psychic scars of the battle with an eldritch horror. He is an exceptional archer but is also vulnerable to morose moods and battle madness. Like many of his kin, he may drop his bow, foam at the mouth and charge berserk into combat. Due to the exposure of the abomination, occasionally is unwell – hearing whispers, seeing things. The symptoms are worse in civilization, so he tends to drink heavily which has gotten him into trouble. However, remains disciplined in the wilderness and on the battlefield…just not in the Tavern. Very superstitious and distrustful of magic. Especially values opinions of bards, shamans, wise women, and seers.
