The year is 1000 AD, the autumn of the viking era. It is five years now since Olaf Tryggvasson declared himself King of Norway and vowed to purge heathendom from the land, and already most of it is formally Christian - although much of it in name only, many people submitting to baptism only from fear of being put to the sword or worse. It has been a violent time, and a dangerous time for changelings in particular, who are named sorcerers and killed by the King's men wherever they are found. But a rumor is spreading that King Olaf won't be returning from his recent expedition to Vindland, and that Norway will soon be in the hands of less zealous lords.

Meanwhile, a handful of changelings have finally slain Eyvind Kelda, the traitor responsible for the death of their lord, Kveldulf Drakajarl, the Dragon Earl. The hunt that has lasted over two years and brought them many scars, bounties, and valuable lessons. Now, the party of escapees from Jotunheim finally have the key to what is probably the safest place in Norway for their kind to live: The grand, magical mead hall and fortress of Tákahall, the Fog Hall. Here, hidden in a Hollow in the Hedge by the young town of Nidaros at what was once the Drakajarl's court, they can at last settle down and attempt to build themselves a life again.

For some of them, that hope may be enough. Weary of a life of adventure and danger on the fjords and in the mountains, they may wish to settle into a life of domestic comfort as soon and as thoroughly as they can. Others, however, may feel emboldened by the successes they have managed to win so far, the lure of battle and unseen wonders beckoning to them still. And to spur on such thoughts, the high seat stands empty, and Kveldulf Jarl's trappings of power gleam alluringly from their places of honor, beckoning to the bold of heart. Will anyone risk the dangers of trying to take the title of Drakajarl for themselves?

Outside the safety of their new abode, the world is waiting, as wondrous and as merciless as ever. King Olaf may be gone, but the faith he brought with him persists in the face of adversity, and its trappings are anathema to changelings. And beyond the Hedge or the Jókull, in the mountains, woods, glaciers and deep, dark fjords of Jotunheim, the lords and the ladies sit like spiders in their webs, eager to reclaim any escaped thrall who wanders too close.
