Katherine Reed

Name: Katherine Reed

Age: 15

Appearance: Katherine is just over 5' tall and is very petite. Her auburn hair is usually kept in a short bob ponytail and underneath a gray baseball cap. The large bill of her loose fitting cap keeps the sun out of her hazel eyes. She wears a pair of boys' olive drab cargo pants, a black thermal, a dark trekking jacket, and a pair of brown hiking shoes. The oddest part of her appearance is the adult-sized green hiking bag that's just a little too big for her frame, the semi-auto hunting rifle on her shoulder, the 9mm handgun on her hip, the hatchet on the belt strap of her bag, and the large kitchen knife secured to her left shoulder strap of the bag thanks to a makeshift cardboard and duct-tape sheath.

Notable Possessions:
The hiking bag belonged to a friend and mentor that kept Katherine alive through most of the apocalypse. While also carrying most of the essential gear for Kat's survival, the bag itself has great sentimental value as it's one of the last things Kat owns of her friend.
The rifle and handgun are the other key gifts by her friend, Jacob, that have kept Kat alive through the apocalypse.

General Personality: Katherine is very stand-offish. Once, a happy little girl, Zombieland has definitely changed her in the worst possible way. She is quick to judge others and assume the worst in people, because she's seen it first hand. She is untrusting of strangers and not one to lower her gun first. She has seen the worst side of people and has come out somewhat broken because of it. She doesn't shy away from violence and is actually more likely to pull that trigger when needed because of her small size, knowing hesitation can get her killed. She is still a little girl, but she refuses to be fragile ever again.

Back-Story: Katherine was with her family when everything went to hell. Her father was a professor and her mother was a stay-at-home mom; neither were really into camping or prepping for any kind of disaster. When everyone was in a panic and trying to get out of the cities, her family was right with them. They abandoned their car when the inevitable zombie horde came by, her father trying in vain to hold off the zombies so Kat and her mother could escape. They ran for miles before making it to a small camp of survivors. They made the mistake of staying for the night before the horde caught up with them again. This time, her mother made the sacrifice so Kat could run. She found herself alone in the woods for some time, too afraid to stop and rest. She eventually collapsed out in some field. When she came to, she awoke next to a campfire with an older man cooking something over the fire. The man, Jacob, had found her in the woods and recognized her from the camp. They shared their stories and Jacob took it on himself to help keep Kat safe, teaching her all kinds of survival things. They got by okay for a couple of months finding a few survivor groups to stay with here and there. Differences of opinions and in-fighting would lead them to go their separate ways before things escalated. Winter was when the real hell began.

As food and other supplies got rarer and rarer, bandits became the norm. Cities became more dangerous, not just because of the high zombie population, but because of bandit groups hording supplies and attacking anyone they came across. Kat and Jacob normally stayed away from the cities for this specific reason but Kat got sick, really sick. Jacob made a solo run into the nearest city for medicine and came back with a bullet wound in his side. "Totally worth it" were his words when he opened his bag to reveal a small treasure trove of medical supplies. He smiled through gritted teeth as he cleaned the wound, stitched himself up, and applied a sterile bandage. Their luck didn't last forever though. On a supply run in another city, Kat was captured by a gang of serious sickos. They only had her for a few hours but despite her young age, they took deep pleasure in beating her. And the torture didn't just stop at beating. Jacob eventually tracked down the group but the damage was already done. He killed as many as he could before rescuing Kat. During their escape, Jacob took a few shots to the back. He eventually bled to death and Kat found herself alone and broken. After some much needed grieving and healing time, she planned her revenge. She scouted out the group for a week, taking careful notes on their numbers and habits. When she attacked in the middle of the night with Jacob's rifle, she counted off each bandit she killed until she was sure they were all dead. She took as much as she could carry in Jacob's bag and left the rest of the supplies outside their compound for other survivors. She's been on her own ever since, trying to get through the rest of Zombieland without becoming a victim again.
