Lost in the Snow

"War does not determine who is right—only who is left."

— Bertrand Russell

Winter is a lonely place to die.

The protracted war that has crippled your lands drags on interminably, measured in bodies and in the crimson-spattered snows of year's end. You are soldiers—or at least part of the army—and the grim things you have seen mark you, age you, weigh you down. Gray skies heralding a long, cold season do nothing to slow the measured tramp of enlisted boots toward and away from the fields of combat, though the mud clinging to your soles is a constant reminder of death and despair. The war is not over just because rain has turned to sleet and hail; the war is not over simply thanks to freezing temperatures and slick stones, underfoot. The war is never over.

You are on your way to battle, maybe your last. Maybe there will be hundreds more. Either way makes little difference, for if an enemy blade does not take your life from you, the odds are mounting that chill northern winds and sodden clothing will.

War is not glorious. War is not noble. War is not just.

But here you are, and here you stay.

Winter...is a lonely place to die.
