Personality: Strong. Serious. Responsible. Betta is all of those things and more. She has very little sense of humor and rules the kitchen with an iron fist and a large wooden spoon which she is quick to use.

Brief History: Betta's life is one of broken dreams. As an orphaned child being raised as a drudge in Bitra Hold, she dreamed of having a family who loved her. That never became a reality. So she drudged in the Hold until the Head Cook there saw her talent with food and suggested she apprentice to the Bakercraft. Then she dreamed of becoming a Master Baker and being famous throughout Pern. But the Lord Holder refused to pay the small amount of marks to send her to the Baker Crafthall. So that dreamed died. Still, the Head Cook taught her all he knew and helped her extend her natural talents. She and the Head Cook eventually fell in love although he was almost twenty years her senior. They married and planned to have a large family.

Five times Betta became pregnant but was only able to carry one child to term, her last one. During the birth, there were complications and the Healer said that she would never be able to have another child. Still, she had her little girl and was thankful. The little family was happy until five years later when Betta's husband contracted a fever and died. She still grieves for him. Ten years later, a visiting small holder decided he liked the looks of her daughter and took her to bed with him. The result was a pregnancy that neither wanted. Regardless, Doretta carried the child. During the birthing, though, she lost too much blood and died. The child, a boy, survived.

Needing to escape, Betta left Bitra Hold and applied for the Head Cook position at several places. She was accepted at Sea Cliff Weyr and is now Head Cook there, raising her beloved grandson, the only thing she has left of her family.
