Echoes from the Darklands

The Darklands, the name given to the savage territory where the uncivilized races dwell.  For hundreds of years the creatures of the Darklands, orcs, goblins, ogres, and other such beings, made constant forays into the civilized lands.  The attacks would be small at first, then over the years progress in size and aggression until a massive horde of creatures spilled out from the Darklands, razing all in their path until stopped, driven back deep into the Darklands.

     The last such invasion occurred nearly eighty-five years ago and was the largest to date, ravaging much of the land.  It was finally driven off at great cost by the combined efforts of all the civilized peoples who, in an unprecedented act of camaraderie, gathered together their resources to build a great wall blocking the Darklands creatures from making their way so easily into their lands.  The wall stands today, manned by a military force representing all peoples and has ushered in an era of prosperity; allowing industrial and agricultural advances to be made.

     Over the last several years, however, an eerie calm has descended over the Darklands.  The soldiers standing guard on the wall have reported that attacks have been becoming less frequent and seemingly half-hearted in their attempts to bypass the fortification.  People are starting to believe that the threat posed by the Darklands has been vanquished, and old rivalries are beginning to once again make themselves noticed.  The once strong alliance between the peoples' has begun to wane, and in some areas civil war and in-fighting has erupted.  Criminal banditry and unlawful rebellions have begun to crop up across the lands, while pirates and smugglers invade the waters.

     Such times of turmoil are the testing grounds for heroes, and adventurers of all stripes hear the call of action, duty, opportunity, or simple greed...
