Poco Tehuantl

Eddy Romerez was a typical street-rat growing up in the ghettoes of Hermosilla {capital city of the Mexican state of Sonora}.  He was strong and fit; and didn't beleive 'the old man who lived by the grocery store' that he was honoured with the spirit of Tehuantl, and that it was his destiny to protect those who could not protect themselves.

Years later, Eddy came to understand what the old one meant; when, one humid summer night, a rage came over him when his sister was attacked.  When all was said and done, Eddy was the living embodiment of the human-jaguar, and his sisters assailants lay dead in the street.

That was many years ago; and since then, Eddy has tried to learn what he could about the ancient shamanistic Lores, and has continued protecting those who cannot protect themselves.

Poco Tehuantl is a young man (well, humanoid catman) of average build and stature; if a little shorter than the average man.  His face is hybrid human-cat, resembling a 'black panther' jaguar.
A thin sheen of black hair covers his entire body, and he sports a veryhuman 'mane' of long black hair that falls about his shoulders.

He prefers loose fitting cargo pants, for modesty; but otherwise wears  little else ... as his fur keeps him warm, and hides the flesh beneath from view.

His hands are hybrid cat-human, sporting pads and claws, yet also five elongated fingers with opposable thumb.
His feet are definately feline (and could never wear human shoes).

'Poco' has an infectious smile, and he seems to thoroughly enjoy life.

Height: 5'5"     Weight: 180lb

The real world facts and fictions of Tehuantl

The jaguar is a big cat, and the only Panthera species found in the Americas.

The jaguar is the third-largest feline after the tiger and the lion, and the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The jaguar's present range extends from Southern United States and Mexico across much of Central America and south to Paraguay and northern Argentina.

The 'Black Panther'  in Latin America is typically a melanistic color variant of the typical jaguar.

This big cat most closely resembles the leopard physically, although it is usually larger and of sturdier build and its behavioural and habitat characteristics are closer to those of the tiger.

The jaguar is largely a solitary, opportunistic, stalk-and-ambush predator at the top of the food chain (an apex predator). It has an exceptionally powerful bite, even relative to the other big cats.  This allows it to pierce the shells of armoured reptiles and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of prey between the ears to deliver a fatal bite to the brain.

The jaguar has featured prominently in the mythology of numerous indigenous American cultures, including that of the Maya and Aztec.

Tehuantl means 'jaguar' in Nahuatl, the ancient language derived from the Mayan culture. It was a magical and formidable creature which was very important in the meso-American culture.  It was revered by the `mayans as the god, Tehuantl.
Though not as familiar as the lion and tiger which we in the West  revere, Tehuantl is actually the second strongest of all mammals for its size.

It has been said that this creature can drag a 300 kg bull 8 m in its jaws and pulverize the heaviest bones. Three hundred kg is almost three times its size, it reaching a maximum weight of 90kg.  Another interesting fact about `Tehuantl is that it would eat the heart and lungs of the prey before eating the rest of the animal.

For these reasons, it was given godlike status by the ancient  Mayans and Olmecs of  Mexica (Mexico).  Only few in the ruling class could don the magnificent jaguar pelt.
