Ged is a tall man who looks much older than he (probably) is.  His hair is grey bordering on white, and his full beard makes him look rather mature.  He walks leaning on a staff, suggesting age-related infirmity.  He has a far-away look in his eyes, and his speech and mannerisms suggest that he is greatly preoccupied with something.

Could it be that he just wandered here by random chance and is not really aware of what he is involved with?
