1791 - After a negotiation between Josiah Southwark and Louis de Montigny, on the behalf of daughter Mary and son Francois, the latter are married in London.
1792 - Claire is born in Allton on June 1.
1804 - Claire's mother dies; she goes to live with her grandfather in London.
1813 - Claire returns to Allton.

A defining incident in Claire's life occurred when she was 12, when her mother became ill and died. Claire acted out in a unacceptable ways, and no one could control her. Her father was not in Allton, but was in France.

So, she went to live with Grandfather Southwark in London, who raised her there until recently. She now has returned to Allton: In her view, to take charge of the household. There could be trouble ahead.

Claire often has had to live by her wits, and has a complicated outlook on life.
