Anthony Daniels worked at the Oakland Tribune with Katie and always found her very attractive.  He played Baseball (as a pitcher) for the Stanford Cardinals in college but blew out his shoulder, which ended what could have been a professional career in the minors.
After school Anthony got an internship at the Tribune.  After a month he quit the internship and started working free-lance for the Huffington post.  He was then hired at the Tribune “based on his portfolio”, but actually based on his small amount of local fame at Stanford.
Anthony is good looking and athletic.  He’s funny (at least he thinks so), and is generally well liked (especially by the ladies) [Note:  Think Leon Kennedy from Resident Evil].  Although his fame & charisma got him the job it isn’t helping him to advance in it.  He has come to realize that he needs a big story to help propel him to the next level.
When a drinking buddy tells him about a younger cousin (Morris D'Angelo) and how he was wrongfully arrested for a crime (that he actually committed, but was tricked by the CIA) Anthony is curious, but there’s little he can do.

“If I come across anything I’ll let you know, but that isn’t really a story.”

After a month or two passes, Anthony gets a tip from an anonymous source claiming that Morris’s story is not as unique as one may assume.
There has been a rash of bizarre arrests of people claiming that the government set them up.  It could easily be dismissed as conspiracy theory bullshit, but in 96% of these cases the inmate is sentenced to, or later earn themselves a lifetime sentence; with-in 1 to 2 years they are dead.
