Sophia is an administrative assistant/ unofficial intern for the SER foundation.  She assisted Amanda (during project StarGate II) in searching for compatible DNA [see history of research for details]  The names were of course redacted for purposes of anonymity.
As a goof, Sophia and her cousin (Chip) were able to hack the national archives looking through the matched names to the genome scans.  They were curious to see if anybody they knew made it into the batches of test subjects.  They noticed their cousin Morris’s name among the possible contenders.
To Sophia’s surprise, less than a year later Morris was in jail with a wild tale of government coercion and betrayal.  Chip left a backdoor in the database so that he could access it later [mostly because he’s a self-righteous do-gooder/vigilante].
After Morris’s arrest, Sophia exploited that information and did some research into Morris’s situation.  She discovered that he was only one of many such cases across the United States.
With some evidence in hand (though far from definitive proof); & fearing the loss of her livelihood (and possibly her life); Sophia withheld some information (ie: proof ) choosing instead to leak the story anonymously to a reporter.  Specifically Anthony Daniels (a friend of Chip).
