Xar'ach

At a towering height of 7'3" and weighing almost 350 pounds, his sheer size demands attention and respect from those around him. His striking appearance, with wolf-like features and piercing eyes that burn like molten orange, can strike fear into the hearts of even the most valiant souls. Yet, beneath his fearsome exterior lies a gentle soul, evident in his tender interactions with others. However, in battle, he transforms into a ferocious warrior, a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.

His skin boasts a rich, brownish-red hue, which is adorned by a luxuriously groomed brindle coat of fur. The fur is crisscrossed with white-grey streaks, which hint at the scars from past battles, further adding to his intimidating presence. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in the way he maintains his gear and personal hygiene.

He seldom speaks as he is used to being alone and his silence is often misinterpreted as a lack of intelligence, a misperception reinforced by his imposing appearance. His true age remains unknown, even to himself, but his mature countenance suggests a goblinoid in his late twenties.

Backstory
Taken as a child, his first clear memories are of unending blackness and the voice inside his head. The Drow slavers bartered him to a mind flayer, who dragged him deep into the Underdark where his days became a living hell.

Hunger was his constant companion and the slightest transgression resulted in cruel and severe punishment. The mind flayer’s methods of torture were not simply physical, such as being chained to the floor in the middle of an open room, the denial of the already meager rations or beatings. The psychological tortures were worse, cruel hallucinations and illusions that sought to shatter his already fragile psyche were common and the master often fed on his thoughts or emotions.

Years of misery and despair passed until the arrival of light in the Underdark and with it the din of battle. The mind flayer’s grip on his mind disappeared, leaving only a deafening quiet. Later, an elf shattered the chains that held him and gave him food. The elf and her companions gathered the master’s servants together, told them that they were now free and offered to take whoever wished back to the surface with them.

He stayed close to the elf, did as she asked and tried to help her as they traveled. He also began to emulate her, her pace, the way she held a knife, even her laugh. The group eventually emerged from the Underdark in the city of Skullport and went their separate ways. The elf continued to her home in Neverwinter accompanied by her new ward.

Thus, it was that the elvish ranger, Aradan Rudur, became his savior, mentor and mother figure. He couldn’t recall the name his family had given him, so she named him Stalker or Xar’ach in the language of his people for he could usually catch even her unawares. She instructed him in the ways of the wild and of the city and the pair adventured together until a severe wound forced Aradan to retire to a quieter life. Xar’ach continued on his own, tirelessly guarding the people against the monstrous beasts that roamed the land.

However, he remains haunted by his memories, trapped in a never-ending cycle of nightmares where the master refuses to leave his mind. In his waking hours, the silence is often more deafening than the haunting voice that had plagued him for years. Nevertheless, he perseveres, motivated by his unending gratitude towards Aradan, to whom he remains fiercely loyal.
