Ulman was the fourth son of Dieter and Tilde Holzbeck, and the youngest of their seven children. Dieter worked as a merchant in his namesake town of Holzbeck and did business both at home and between several other nearby towns. The family was fairly wealthy, and the prospect of feeding the seven extra mouths was not problematic. The trouble arose when the family's seventh child was born with a full head of blond hair. Dieter came from a long line of dark-haired men, who had many dark-haired children. Even those who married women with lighter hair still always had dark-haired children. Tilde had wonderful blond hair, and yet, the six children she bore before Ulman all had the typical dark hair of their line.

Dieter, of course, assumed that he had been cuckolded and, recalling a blond minstrel who had visited the town at some point within the last year, became enraged. He was certain that this fourth son was not of his blood. Tilde pleaded with him, swearing her eternal loyalty, but the merchant would have none of it. Ulman was given to the Cult of Sigmar while still an infant, to be raised by the church. This was Dieter's compromise with his wife: he would give the child his name, saving both of their reputations, but he would not have him in the house.

Her talent for leadership, reading people, and even crushing greenskins when necessary, led to her being hand-picked by Ulman as his second-in-command.

Otto is from Altdorf, where he grew up in an family of artisans. After completing his apprenticeship, he married and moved to a more rural town to raise a family. The town was attacked by greenskin raiders. He was saved by the Order of the Silver Hammer, but his wife and two infant children did not survive. He stowed his trade tools in his apron, picked up a warhammer and signed on to serve the church in a quest for vengeance.

She also showed an aptitude for military concerns and entered training as a soldier. Once she was cut loose as an adult, she offered her services as a soldier, and leader, to the Order of the Silver Hammer.
