Robert Pemberton
Robert Pemberton is tall and lean with a grizzled beard, piercing blue eyes and unruly dark hair. At 35 he is in the prime of his life and is quite attractive when he manages to smile.
He grew up in rural, upstate Georgia to a semi-wealthy family of farmers. Always intelligent and driven Robert went off to medical school in Baltimore. While in school he met a Charlotte Atkins a beautiful daughter of one of the shipping magnates of the city. They were married immediately after his graduation and moved down to Atlanta where he set up a soon thriving medical and surgical practice. Charlotte bore him a son and daughter in rapid succession.
When Georgia succeeded from the Union Robert was not enthusiastic. He'd never been comfortable with slavery and didn't support going to war to sustain it. Still he was loyal to his state and joined the 10th Georgia regiment. Robert saw action in all of the major battles in the Virginia theater including Gettysburg as well as the battle of Chickamauga as part of Longstreet's corps in Bragg's army.
He was devastated when he learned at the close of the war that his beloved wife and children had been killed by raiders. It was never determined whether the men in the night with guns and fire were Union or Confederate or just lawless men but Robert was deeply embittered. He took with him only his horse, weapons, what money he could find and a locket with his wife's picture and headed west into Indian country to escape his past and the dreams and nightmares.
