Murray is smart, for a rat.

Fairly early on, he learned that cats will accept information in exchange for not killing him.  He's also smart enough to realise that if he isn't (mostly) honest, then word will get round and the next cat he meets will just kill him.

Murray is known to be a useful informant, with the ability to overhear all manner of useful gossip.
