Basic Personality: Phineus presents two distinct faces to the world, depending on the situation. In formal social circles he's seen as quiet, dour and withdrawn. The truth is that formal events bore him to tears and he does his best to endure such situations by keeping himself emotionally detached. With his close friends (including the bohemian crowd that he hangs around with in London), Phineus is outgoing, gregarious, witty, and naughty. It is in these situations that he truly feels like himself.

History: Phineus Dalton is the younger son of the current Earl of Essex, Reginald Dalton. The Dalton family is a respected lineage, with many family being members in good standing with the Royal Arcane society. Being the younger son, Phineus always felt a bit neglected as his parents spent most of their time and affection on preparing his brother Richard for his future life as the new Earl of Essex. Richard is quite accomplished in abjuration and his parents are thrilled to have their heir continue on in the proud magical tradition of the family. There is one thing that neither he nor his father know. Phineus is not Reginalds blood son. He is, in fact, the son of the deceased William Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire. Reginald and William were friends and William had a dalliance with Phineous' mother that she never told Reginald about. The only person who knows the truth about Phineous' lineage is his mother Winifred.

Phineus was often left more or less alone and that suited him quite well. He was an adventurous child, always pushing the boundaries of what he was allowed, frustrating his governess and later his valet as he got up to all sorts of mischief. Initially he kept his own magical abilities secret from his parents for fear that he would attract their attention. Eventually they discovered his talent for illusion and conjuration when Phineus was asked not to return to an elite boarding school because of his mischievous use of magic that upset some of the other students.

Phineus was never good at school and when he barely graduated he convinced his parents that he should take an off year before university to explore the arts in London, lying when he told them that he wanted to explore using his magic to create 'visual creations of light' in the vein of great artists like Rembrandt or Michelangelo. In truth, he just wanted to explore London and be free of the social constraints that bound his parents and his older brother.

Phineus loved his foray into the alternative side of London. He acquired a residence in Chelsea, the heart of the artist and writers quarter at the time. He spent the next decade loving life. He made friends with poets, artists, thieves and whores. He reveled in life among the lower class and found freedom there that let him be who he wanted to be without social disapproval. He kept putting off his parents claiming that he was exploring the art scene and apprenticing with painters and sculptors who were teaching him so much. He returned to them at the holidays, boasting about his 'studies' and proving to them that his time in London was worthwhile. They have been pressuring him to return home to participate in the social season, worried that any further delays may affect his ability to secure a proper wife.
