The EMH Mk.III is a holographic expert system designed as a supplement to the normal medical staff of a ship or base. The Mk.III is a part of the PIP (Product Improvement Programme) designed to give the Emergency Medical Hologram a more acceptable beside manner. Someone at Starbase 21 Medical is apparently a fan of old flatscreen Earth television and gave the Outpost 3 EMH the appearance of Hawkeye Pierce, a MASH surgeon from an old comedy.

EMH Mk.I's have been replaced with newer models. Contrary to rumours circulating within Starfleet, the EMH Mk.I has not been adapted for mining duties, it has merely been discontinued.
