Shanklin ‘Shanks’ Mackenzie was born in the East End of London on a council estate, son of a white British building site foreman father and a second generation Trinidadian immigrant mother who worked part time in a local bookies. A below average student, he got bored easily at school and was often in trouble, mainly stupid stuff with his mates, occasionally something a bit more serious...

When the Royal Marines came recruiting at his college he signed up immediately, completing his training before being assigned to 40 Commando at Norton Manor. A popular and able Marine, he rose to the rank of Corporal.

When the Twilight War broke out he was assigned to a task force in Turkey, serving alongside the Turkish Amphibious Marine Brigade, conducting raids in joint allied operations with Turkish, British and US troops. Initially these were well coordinated, but after the higher command structure disintegrated (at least from what he could see) the units were left to continue fighting a guerrilla war, sporadically raiding Soviet outposts and supply convoys. During this time he got word that his father had been killed in a bombing raid in London, his brother (a Junior Technician in the RAF) was MIA in Poland, and his mother and sister had fled to Trinidad.

During a raid on the Southern Naval Base in Crimea he was wounded and knocked unconscious by a rocket blast. When he woke up he was far from the battle, having been rescued by some local Tatar’s and taken to their village. There a friendly but long-retired doctor helped set his broken leg and tend his wounds. As he recovered he helped the villagers as best he could, and in return they hid him from Soviet forces.

Then the slavers hit the village. He fought hard but was captured and taken to Khorly to work in the fields. He has been there ever since.
