In 199x, a research laboratory in New York City was conducting experiments on an object known as the Obelisk. This object, discovered in 1982 by the University of Columbia archaeology department in Mesopotamia, was seemingly indecipherable. It also seemed to be giving off a type of radiation previously unknown. This eventually prompted the University to hand over the Obelisk to the government for study or, possibly, containment.The experiments on the Obelisk eventually bore fruit in the form of what they called Sleepers. The discovery that communications were coming from the Obelisk could only come through dreams prompted the military to gather and train people suited to the task. These Sleepers were able to discover a language, a message...instructions. The ominous and mysterious nature of these instructions prompted uncharacteristic caution and the project was halted.
In the beginning, there was darkness and the Earth was formless void. But the darkness was not empty. And no one could foresee the malice of the demons that created the Obelisk in the small hours of the worlds. They would not abide. The fruition of their machinations would not be deterred by the reticence of fearful men. Their mistake was that they thought the Sleepers were windows to other worlds...they were doors.
The rifts split open all across the planet. Leylines exploded with energy, the portals opened and unleashed hell on Earth. Demons and plagues came, straight from the pages of ancient texts still used, but increasingly irrelevant and misunderstood. Only the oldest of entries seemed to carry weight, there was no mercy of a rapture and no savior in sight to deliver those left behind.
The world became a nightmare of Demons and their monsters, tormenting everyone who survived. Plagues and disasters ravaged the survivors. Hope died quickly, and people only seem to live now because they don't know how to do anything else...and this at the whim of the devils that now held dominion over the Earth.
