He picks the most beautiful rose he could find before being confronted by the Beast that dwelled in the palace.

The Beast was furious for having his most beautiful possession stolen after providing the merchant a meal and a roof to escape the storm and told him that he must die for his crime. The merchant begged for his life, explaining that he only picked the rose to bring back to his daughter. The decided to let him go, but only on the condition that the Merchant or one of his daughters returned to the palace.

The merchant accepted and the Beast sent him back with a vast amount of wealth in jewels and gold, along with fine clothing for his children. The Beast made the merchant promise that the youngest daughter would never know about what had happened at the palace. However upon returning home the daughter pries the secret from her father. The merchant's sons wanted to return to the palace and kill the Beast, but the merchant dissuades them and his youngest daughter returns to the palace.

She is warmly welcomed by the Beast and gives her a life of luxury, catering to her every whim. She explained that she does indeed love the Beast but as a friend and she became convinced that the prince was hidden somewhere in the Beast's castle. She searched the palace but was unable to find him.

After several months with the Beast, the girl asks him if she can return home to visit her family. He agrees on the condition that she return in exactly one week and provides her with an enchanted mirror to allow her to see what is going on at the Beast's palace and a ring to allow her to instantly return if she turned it three times on her finger.

The girl returns home and her sisters are jealous of the fine jewels and clothes that she now owns but when they tried them on the dresses turned to rags from the enchantments placed on them, only to return to their original beauty when returned to her. The sisters' jealousy grows and they beg the girl to stay using onions to fake tears in the hope that she will stay and anger the Beast and cause him to eat her.

She stays with her family, but begins to feel guilty about having broken her promise to the Beast. She decided to look through the mirror and finds him lying near death in the rose garden from heartbreak. The girl uses the ring to instantly return to him, rushing to be by his side. She tried to wake him and when she couldn't she began to cry, telling him how much she truly did love him.

As the tears fell on his body, his heartbreak was healed and the curse on him was lifted, causing the Beast to transform into the Prince she had seen in her dreams. He tells her the story of how he was cursed by a fairy and that only true love could break the spell.

The two were married and lived happily together until they were forced to flee through the Rift.

She had almost nothing but the clothes on her back the the heirlooms she kept with her and no idea where she was. The journey caused her to lose all memory of the life she had lived on the the other side of the rift. Even without the memories of the past though, she knew deep down that the mirror she held would be the key to finding out who she was.

She wandered through the forest, lost and alone until she was found on the side of the road by a sweet elderly nun. She took the girl back to her convent and gave her a warm meal and a place to stay. She took up a new name, Sophia Rousseau and remained in the care of the nuns for quite some time. Eventually she started feel something drawing her away and she reluctantly left the convent, hoping that following this urge would help her figure out who she was.

The pull led her to Havencrest and once she arrived she learned that this was where belonged. Over time she started to regain memories of her childhood and the life the she had in the Beast's castle. However no matter how hard she tried she couldn't not see him or remember his name, the space he filled was left a dark shadow in her memories.

Only recently did she remember that the mirror that she cherished was supposed to be able to show him to her but the journey had caused the reflective glass to crack. When she looked into its surface she could only see her own reflection staring back at her. Deep down she knows that the mirror will be what will lead her to her Prince and she is determined to get it repaired so that she can finally find him.
