Trygve

Trygve barely fits inside his skin. Taut, lithe muscles slide and pulse beneath his sun darkened flesh. He dresses simply, long gray tunics with a simple pattern around the neck and sleeves. He allows himself the indulgence dark blue leg wrappings when needed. Brown with a few streaks of gray, he keeps his hair and beard neatly braided. It’s not unusual for his daughter to weave a wildflower into his locks. Trygve pretends not to notice.

His voice flows from his mouth like a wide river; strong, slow, powerful. His laughter fills a room.

Personality: The Vikings have a saying, “The thrall alone takes instant vengeance; the coward never.” In general, it means a man should not let his emotions drive quick action. Rather, a proper response comes over time and through deliberate action. A more literal interpretation drives Trygve’s personality. Patient and cautious, Trygve waits for the right time to claim revenge against Orm, a jarl who slighted his family, years ago.

The older Viking is not afraid to show affection to or pleasure in his family. Discipline stems from a disapproving look and a soft word, rather than a shout or blow. The other members of his farmstead cannot remember a time when he showed anger, but they remember tears at the death of his wife, Yrsa. If he harbors any resentment at his son, Sune, for her death in childbirth, it doesn’t show.

Biography: Trygve hasn’t shared too much of his past with me, yet. I know that he raided as a younger man, eventually finding an area to settle in a new land. His family followed and the started to tend the land in a farmstead with four other families. He keeps a small flock of sheep and pigs, and grows oats, barley and wheat as the seasons allow. They buried his wife in a small cemetery at the edge of their former holding.

At some point, Orm prevented his family from becoming a landholder in the old lands. It’s a sin that’s inexorably intertwined with Trygve’s love for his family. He doesn’t want revenge for vengeance's own sake. He seeks it as an extension of his commitment to loved ones.

Family: Yrsa, wife, deceased; Liv, daughter, 12; Sune, son, 10
