Zaxim Asida

Zaxim Asida
Flight Controller

Zaxim was born far away from the Bolian Homeworld because his father worked for Star Fleet as a Chef. The early part of his life was spent as in San Francisco at Starfleet Command.

Young Bolians on their home world are normally raised together by the community. Zaxim was on of the few Bolians at Star Fleet Command. He did not have the normal upbringing that most of his race did. His family was loving and very social as are most Bolians, but not having the group dynamic left young Zaxim to his own devices most of the time. When not studying; he spent much of his time watching old serials from the Earth. His favorite was the Tales of the Golden Monkey. From the moment he discovered the show he wanted to be just like the hero ace pilot, Jake Cutter. Being young; he romanticized Star Fleet, and knew that the only way he could be like his idol was to join to become a Star Fleet Helmsman.

Zaxim became very focused on his quest to join Star Fleet. He was not the best student, but his eagerness to succeed was both enduring and annoying to his teachers. He refused to fail spending his days near the Starfleet Command talking to any that would talk to him.

He did well in the Academy, but he chomped for the excitement of space. The high point of the Academy was when he was made a member of the Nova Squadron. At times, flying with the Nova Squadron helped calm him down slightly, but most of the time it made him just want to be out there more.

Sadly, his first assignment was that as a shuttle pilot providing transportation for Senior Officers and Dignitaries attending Star Fleet Command. A few month's into his duty; he met Captain Dax Lincoln, the man that would become his mentor. Their flight from Utopia Planitia Shipyards was uneventful, but Zaxim gregarious nature took over as he talked incessantly to the Captain. The next day, Zaxim received orders to report to the Captain's ship to become one of the ship's Helmsman.

Over the next year; the Captain seemed to take personal interest in Zaxim. He was often hard on the young Ensign, but than afterwards he would give fatherly like support. The Captain often took the shuttle versus transporting to most sites. Of course, Zaxim talked during the trips, but sometimes only the Captain spoke. He told Zaxim things about his life....Victories.....Defeats....Even Regrets. The Captain never asked him not to talk about it, but Zaxim never did. He felt that what he told him was almost a sacred memory.

One year after joining the Captain; he awoke to the alarm Klaxon he ran towards the bridge calling on his comm badge to get instructions. The silence was deafening. As he came off the Turbo lift, the bridge was empty, and the forward view screen showed the planet coming closer as ship plummeted towards it. Zaxim did not know where the other crew was, but he had to act quick or the ship would be destroyed by the reentry into the atmosphere. His hands flying on the console; he knew he was doing everything correct, but no matter what he did he could not right the ship. As ship seemed to burn up around him, Zaxim recognized the voice of Captain Lincoln. "Simulation stop."

All the Klaxons stopped as the systems indicated the all was normal. The view screen showing  normal space. Zaxim was almost in tears, "Sir, I am sorry sir I failed."

The Captain looked at him, "Yes, you did, but you didn't do anything wrong. Sometimes, you can do everything right. That doesn't mean that you win."

The Captain said no more as he turned around. Two days later, the Captain announced his retirement from Starfleet. A few weeks later, the ship returns to Earth, and right where their journey begins it ended.

Zaxim took the Captain one last time to Star Fleet Command. The ride was strangely silent until he asked the Captain why he had put him through that simulation.

The Captain answered calmly, "Ensign, I am not your father. My job as your first Captain is to prepare you for the future. What we do is exciting and at times heroic, but it is also dangerous. People fail, and worse die. You needed to learn this lesson. This is not one of your serials. Better, a simulation than for real. I have put in for your promotion to Lt Jg, and you have a new assignment."

The Captain said no more simply disembarking. Rumors came a few days later that the Captain had retired because he was dying. Hearing that news, Zaxim finally understood the lesson of the simulation.
