The call for reinforcements has gone out. Skrynne has fallen to the orks, and it is only a matter of time before mankind is pushed from the world completely. There is no solution but to throw bodies into the fires of war until the green menace is drowned in the blood of mankind.
First into the fight are the expendable, undesireable, and ultimately condemned penal legions to secure the toehold of humanity amid the sea of trees that cover the world. Among the dregs of various penal regiments sent into the meat grinder are the personal wards of one Commissar Immanuel Baker. Insubordinate dogs, layabouts and incompetent bunglers the lot of them, who have been chosen to die first to redeem their souls in the Emperor's eyes.
